Here’s what I’d change if I could go back and do it all again… Letting anxiety* hold me back *By anxiety I mean the emotion rather than the mental illness. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on Past Sabrina: it was a nerve-racking time, and it’s completely understandable for 18-year-old me, who had never lived away from home, to be nervous about moving into a flat of strangers in the remote town of Aberystwyth in Wales. Luckily, I already knew Aberystwyth well from family holidays there, and it’s a small town, so I knew I’d be fine on that front. However, this didn’t stop me from having a brief cry on my very first night in my new room, right after I’d hugged and said goodbye to my family. I was feeling completely overwhelmed. To make things more difficult, I was not only sharing a flat (and tiny kitchen) with about 20 other students, but also sharing a room with a complete stranger. This sort of arrangement isn’t normal at UK universities but that year Aberystwyth had accepted more students than they could accommodate, meaning some of us were put in single rooms with bunk beds. I eventually got my own room in November. I had my bunk room to myself for the first few days until my roommate arrived. I remember coming back to my room and seeing she’d moved all her stuff in, and it suddenly felt very real to me that I was sharing a room with a stranger. She was everything I’m not: self-confident, popular, streetwise. She was from London, very outgoing and made friends with everyone else in the flat really quickly, whereas I’m from a village, and quite shy. She was friendly, but we never bonded, so I felt a little left out when I could tell she was bonding with some of the other girls in our flat. Of course, this is probably my own fault, as part of the way you bond with your flatmates in freshers’ week is by going out, which I didn’t do a lot. Missing out on nights out Going back to my first night, before my roommate had arrived, I remember feeling very intimidated by the sheer number of people in my flat and how loud and excited they were. It’s embarrassing, but I remember hiding in my room while they were laughing and drinking together in the hallway. I remember thinking I should go out and introduce myself, but I couldn’t bring myself to. Eventually I came out to the kitchen to make tea after they’d gone. Another girl also appeared, a really friendly Swiss girl (with her own room…jealous) who said she felt the same way, so we bonded over our mutual shyness. She was really into horse-riding, so a while later I went to the first Riding Club social with her…despite not being a horse rider. Why didn’t I go out? It was a combination of feeling unsure, not being that into drinking at the time, and um…forgetting my I.D. Yeah. I don’t really need to tell you to remember to take your I.D. to university. Luckily, I got it back pretty quickly, but the first time I went for a drink with my flatmates, the bartender was very reluctant to serve me. A much more trivial thing to regret is the fact I didn’t get an “Aber Fresh” t-shirt, something every Aberystwyth fresher got that week by attending the themed freshers’ nights. The photos of you and your flatmates, drunk yet happy, on your first nights out at university are ones you can look back on for years to come. Don’t get me wrong, I still have some interesting photos from first year, but I don’t really have any from freshers’ week. I eventually went out on the Friday of freshers’ week, to the Students’ Union. It’s embarrassing to admit, but it was the first time I’d ever been to a club, so it was a new experience for me. I remember asking my flatmates: “Is the music meant to be so loud you can’t hear yourself think?!” Of course, not having been out as a sixth former made me a socially awkward drunk who thought it was cool to write drunk Facebook statuses, and generally say a lot of stupid things - *cringe*. If you don’t want to go out and you’re not into drinking, you shouldn’t feel pressurized to do so, but, despite this, I definitely feel as though my shyness and nervousness made me miss out on the typical freshers’ experience. So, if you’re not into nights out and boozing, don’t worry: it’s natural to feel anxious, but don’t let that feeling stop you from getting to know your flatmates and meeting new people (there are plenty of ways to do so that don’t involve drinking). I gradually came out of my shell a bit more as time went on. The thing to do in first year was to go to Cwrt Mawr bar (yeah, I don’t know how to say it either) first to get a stamp for free entry to Mad Fridays at the Union, and this was my favourite night out. Even though, to all intents and purposes, it was just a standard club night, with no special gimmicks or themes, the drinks were cheap, the music was good and I had a lot of fun. I wish I’d let go of my fears and thrown myself into the uni experience, but at the time it’s difficult, especially if it’s the first time you’ve ever lived away from home for such a long amount of time. Obviously, it’s great to meet new people and I enjoyed chatting to people in my flat, but on my moving in day I remember walking through the kitchen with my mum, past at least a dozen strangers. It was a little daunting and I exchanged some awkward hellos, worried they were about to comment on me as soon as I’d left the room. Final thoughts Basically, the point I’m making doesn’t just apply to freshers’ week, but to life in general: don’t let fear or anxiety stop you from doing anything you want to do, whether it’s studying abroad in a faraway country with a culture completely different to your own, or simply trying a sport you’ve never tried before at uni. Go for it. The more you get out of your comfort zone, the more memories you’ll have to look back on from your time at university.

Young Goodman Brown Nathaniel Hawthorne made his mark as a major American writer in 1850, with the publication of The Scarlet Letter. His work appeals to different levels of readers because he creates complex and elaborate settings. Through conflicts within his characters, he analyzes the moral and psychological issues often consumed by their own passions. As he was growing up he could not escape the influence of Puritan religion. This influence along with the setting of his hometown in Salem, Massachusetts are common topics in his work in "Young Goodman Brown." Nathaniel Hawthorne considers the question of good and evil, suggesting that true evil is judging and condemning others for sin without looking at one's own sinfulness. He examines the idea that sin is part of being human and there is no escape from it. Of the many symbols he uses in this story, each has a profound meaning. They represent good and evil in the constant struggle of a young innocent man whose faith is being tested. As the story begins, Young Goodman Brown bids farewell to his young wife "Faith, as [she] was aptly named" (211). When she " ?thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap" we associate the purity of "Faith" and the "pink ribbons" as a sign of the innocence and goodness of the town he is leaving behind (211). As he continues "on his present evil purpose" he sets off at sunset to enter the forest (212). A place "darkened by all the gloomiest trees," unknown territory, and a place where "there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree," with this we know the forest represents evil and sinfulness (212). His decision to enter the forest and leave his "Faith" behind is the first decision, of many, between good and evil that he must make. After entering the forest he meets a traveler whom he later finds out is the devil. He is carrying a staff representing evil, "which bore the likeness of a great black snake, so curiously wrought, that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself, like a living serpent" (213). When the traveler offers his staff to Young Goodman Brown he resists by replying, "having kept covenant by meeting thee here, it is my purpose to return whence I came. I have scruples, touching the matter thou wot'st of" (213). Still feeling strong in resisting temptation, Young Goodman Brown refuses to "be the first of the name of Brown, that ever took this path, and kept-" (213). At this time he feels he can resist any temptation by keeping his faith. He refuses to believe the devil when he reveals to him that he has been "?well acquainted with [his] family?[they] were good friends?" (213). In disbelief Young Goodman Brown is devastated, but knows that he still has his Faith. "It would break her dear little heart; and I'd rather break my own!' (214). Trying desperately he holds on to his Christian belief, that he is going to Heaven, even when he recognizes the old woman who passes and says "That old woman taught me catechism!" (215). Soon after he also hears Deacon Gookin and the minister discussing the evenings event. Knowing that these people, in his mind were the forefront of goodness on Earth, he is shattered as, " Young Goodman Brown caught hold of a tree, for support, being ready to sink down on the ground, faint and overburdened with the heavy sickness of his heart " (216). He again tries to resist temptation and cries out, "With Heaven above, and Faith below, I will yet stand firm against the devil!" (216). But when he hears many voices and among them is Faith, in desperation he yells out to her. As he awaits a response, a pink ribbon that "fluttered lightly down through the air" as he catches it he cries, "My Faith is gone!?There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil! for to thee is this world given" (217). When he reaches his final destination he has lost all faith in mankind and everything he believes in. Sex Roles, 56, 543-549. doi: 10.1007/s11199-007-9192-6 Introductory of summary of the study In this article, Sprecher, Fehr, and Zimmerman (2007) attempted to investigate how gender and the propensity to experience the compassionate love for others are associated with the forecast of the enhancement of positive mood from giving help to others and receiving help from others. They aim to examine whether the several psychological theories of helping, which suggested that people provide help due to receiving benefits, are correct or not. More specifically, the benefit received from helping could be the self-benefit, which is the enhancement of positive mood. Finally, they completed the Compassionate Love Scale about their compassionate love for others. This study found that all helping behaviours in this research were good examples of compassionate love and were expected to increase the mood of the individual. More specially, females are more likely to have an expectation of enhancing positive mood as a result of both helping and receiving help in a relational context than males. Moreover, individuals who are high in compassionate love for others are more likely to forecast their enhancement of positive emotion from giving and receiving help than those who are lower on compassionate love. Altruism and gender role are the meaning of these results. Critique Research Topic and Question The problem is clearly stated and is researchable by examining how gender and compassionate love are associated with mood enhancement from helping respectively. There are three variable in the research question and most of them are clearly defined. The mood enhancement is clearly defined as the increase of positive emotion, such as happiness, joy, or satisfaction. The compassionate love also had well-defined with the support of forceful psychological literature. Nevertheless, the definition of helping behaviours was ambiguous. The helping behaviours are defined briefly that merely included the eight helping acts, and stated that those helping acts are commonly experienced in the friendships of young adults. Therefore, it may need to provide a clear definition of helping behaviours in order to clarify which behaviour can be involved in the situation of helping within this study. Literature Review The review is relevant to the research questions and design. The researchers cite previous studies of the association between helping and different variables respectively, such as gender, receiving benefit, and the situational and dispositional variables. Moreover, the review included the previous studies which related the design and the research question of the present study and pointed out the limitations of the previous studies in order to justify the contents of their research. However, the review did not include the literature which contradicts to the prediction of the study, for example, the helping behaviours may not be determined by the rewarding. Sampling The participants were similar in term of education level, ethnicity and social class to reduce the intervention of those variable. Lack of the method of selecting the sample is the limitation of this study. It merely described the number of participants and the ratio of the majority and the background of the participants, but have not reported the sampling method. Furthermore, the ratio of the participants’ gender may not appropriate for this research which the number of the female participants was almost triple of the number of male participants. Since the gender is one of the considerable variables in this study, it is hardly to conclude the effects of gender in the expectation for mood enhancement due to the imbalance of the ratio of the participants’ gender. Method Selection The selected method is appropriate to the research question. Since the questionnaire was the most appropriate and convenient method of self-report, it is suitable for examining the expectation of mood enhancement. In addition, the scenario study can relatively be provided adequate answers to the research question. Because the participants can be easier to imagine the several helping acts by the provided scenarios than the non-scenario questions, the participants can more accurately predict the emotional changing after giving or receiving help. The selected helping acts may not be the most proper indicator of helping behaviour as the limitation of the study, especially making a special meal, buying a present and giving a surprise gift. In general, those three helping behaviours in this research cannot be generalized as helping behaviours because these behaviours may occur in other situations rather than the situation of helping, for example, we may buy a present to our friends for their birthday. Moreover, the participants may increase their mood due to the external reward instead of receiving help. For instance, the participants may feel happy, as well as mood enhancement, because of the gift rather than receiving the help. Therefore, the validity of the research is low since the three helping acts are not appropriate as the helping behaviours. Procedure The designed procedure is clearly described regarding the work of the researchers and appropriate to answer the question of the study. First, the pre-test administered to the small group of similar students assessed the effectiveness of the eight helping behaviours. It was appropriated to ensure that the eight helping behaviours are suitable to measure the mood enhancement as a result of those helping acts. Second, the procedure had protected the confidentiality of the research participants due to the anonymous and voluntary questionnaire. One limitation of the study is that the questionnaire was completed during the class time. In general, the time pressure mostly occurred in the lecture because of the pressing courses. Therefore, the participants may complete the questionnaire arbitrarily, as well as answering inaccurately, because of the time pressure. As a result, the questionnaire can be completed in their leisure time in order to reduce the time pressure as an influential facto r. Data Gathering and Analysis There are several strengths in this section. The data are presented clearly and fully that the results are clearly separated into three sections of the research question which base on the sections of the questionnaire: the helping behaviours were good examples of compassionate love, the association between gender and the expectation of mood enhancement as a result of the helping acts, and the association between compassionate love and the expectation of mood enhancement as a result of the helping acts. Also, the appropriate inferential and descriptive statistics are clearly described in text and presented in organized tables. Furthermore, the results are clearly stated which correlations failed to reach the significance for the helping acts in giving and receiving conditions. For example, male and female participants’ ratings of the giving or receiving a surprise gift did not differ significantly in expectation of mood enhancement. Interpretations, Conclusions and Discussion The researchers clearly concluded that the results of the study provide support for the two hypotheses. However, the results may not conclude that the gender is associate with the forecast of a specific self-benefit because the number of male participants are relative extremely smaller than the number of female participants. Therefore, the association between gender and expectation for mood enhancement is not representative. Although the researchers made a clear interpretations of the results in terms of the gender role and altruism, they had not explained the results of failing to reach the significance for the helping acts as the limitation of the study as well. For example, the helping act of giving or receiving a surprise gift was not a significant difference from male and female participants. Therefore, the study would also be explained the contradictory results for providing well-founded interpretations of the data. The limitations of the study are incomplete that the researchers merely considered two limitations of the study, which focus on a context and an emotional consequence of helping behaviours. Some confound is absent to present in the study, such as the cultural differences, age. Moreover, the participants’ mood also be enhanced by the external rewards rather than receiving or giving help, such as receiving a gift or a meal, when the participants imagine the situation. Therefore, the researchers may need to present the other limitations of the study. Finally, the researchers are presented the suggestion for future studies comprehensively. Edwin Black's War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race To the average American it seems unfathomable that US based research into the "scientific" practice of eugenics could have been the foundation and impetus for Hitler's Nazi genocide and atrocities. In addition, notions of racial superiority and the scientific quest for the development of a pure Aryan nation, both by the United States and foreign countries, particularly Germany, were funded and fueled by monies from such prominent families as the Rockefellers, Carnegies and Harriman's. In his book, War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race, author Edwin Black traces the history of the American eugenics movement, its influence on the rise to power of the Third Reich, and how it was the foundation for the development of scientific racism. Consequently, Black fears that though eugenics in the sense that we recall from the past is gone in name, the future still presents eugenic-like research under the guise of human genetic science, which once again i s supported by corporate funding whose goals are more for monetary gain and globalization, rather than for the benefit of mankind. The origins of eugenic ideology can be traced to the mid-nineteenth century when English philosopher, Herbert Spencer coined the term "survival of the fittest." Those strong and "fittest" would naturally rise to the top, for the benefit of society. Spencer, along with other leading scientists like Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel advocated the principles of the improvement of the human race based on this superiority logic; supporting their findings through the combined applications of science and mathematics. In 1865, statistician Francis J. Galton "postulated that heredity not only transmitted physical features, such as hair color and height, but mental, emotional and creative qualities as well," and so new theories were born. (Page: 15). These characteristics were more than coincidental and Galton set about classifying and categorizing thousands of people based upon his hypothesis that negative hereditary existed, and that bad traits would out weigh the good and as a result, peo ple would spiral biologically downward. Thus the term "eugenics" was utilized as "the study of all agencies under social control which can improve or impair the racial quality of future generations." (Page: 18). Using the principles expounded by Galton and through Mendel's research in laws of recessive and dominant traits discovered in plant breeding, American researchers entered this new scientific field.
